Resume Tips for College Students

Posted on October 16, 2017June 14, 2018 by Andrea

Creating a resume is challenging enough for experienced professionals. For college students and recent graduates, the task proves even more difficult. Absence of significant work experience leaves a large portion of the resume to fill. Fortunately, there are ways to create an impressive resume even when you don’t have an established work history.

1. List Relevant Coursework

As a student, you should have plenty of classes under your belt. On your resume, include classes that are relevant to the job for which you’re applying. This will show employers that you have the foundation of knowledge necessary to take on an entry-level position.

2. Include Projects and Presentations

You worked hard on your projects, papers, and presentations, so why not put them on your resume? These activities teach you important skills such as teamwork, leadership, organization and time management. Be sure that you can talk at length about what you put on your resume, because interviewers will probably ask questions about them.

3. Don’t Forget Computer Skills

Yes, computer skills are a given today, but many job listings still specifically request knowledge of common computer programs. Put all of your software knowledge on your resume, even if it seems unnecessary to you. If you are familiar with industry software or computer languages, even better. You never know when your skills will come in handy.

4. Show off Awards and Honors

Receive any awards or honors while in college? Show them off on your resume! These demonstrate to employers your motivation, talent and intelligence. Awards relevant to your chosen field are most important, but general academic awards or honors can also be included.

5. Foreign Languages are in Demand

Know a foreign language? If so, you’re in luck, because many employers are seeking employees fluent in foreign languages. No matter where you work or what position you hold, your knowledge of a second language will surely be an advantage. Put any foreign language skills on your resume along with fluency level.
